FOURTH WALL founder Florian Koenigsberger fell in love with the game of mahjong after taking a Lunar New Year lesson with NYC’s Green Tile Social Club. Since then, he’s taught more than 250 people how to play, learned several versions / variants of the game and collected a few dozen sets.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
FOURTH WALL founder Florian Koenigsberger learned mahjong with his wife Keshia - a Hong Kong native - by way of a Lunar New Year lesson with NYC’s Green Tile Social Club. From lesson to tournament to mahjong night at their wedding in Kowloon, the seeds of addiction germinated quickly.
To date, Florian has taught more than 250 people how to play, learned several versions / variants of the game and collected a few dozen sets… and counting. FOURTH WALL is our growing community of friends who, every few weeks, ill-advisedly huddle around the tables until sunrise.
Beyond the obvious stuff — the unending hours of play, the clicking of the tiles, the chances to catch up with friends over several rounds — Florian’s interest in the game has personal stakes. His father’s recent Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis sparked an interest in cognitive health, and building camaraderie within our aging communities. One friend’s story of their non-verbal grandparent who, in spite of being unable to communicate with words, gathers the family around the mahjong table every visit really moved him.
How amazing, to learn something you can do into your oldest years that forces you, at least for a few hours, to put your phone away and talk to someone across from you?
